As a result of the crisis, demand at food banks has doubled, and the lack of fresh, high-quality fruit, vegetables and meat is especially profound.
More than 2.4 million New Yorkers continue to suffer from food insecurity, including more than 900,000 children (Food Bank for NYC).
Even before the current global health crisis, food insecurity throughout New York State was deepening. The emergence of COVID-19 has exposed the true magnitude of socioeconomic inequity inherent in our social systems and the fragility and limitations of the very programs designed to address it.
